2O12L

Since the 25th July all of my spare time has been spent at 2O12L which is the Amateur Radio set up to promote and support the Olympics & Para-Olympic Games. Two weeks into the operation I became rota manager, responsible for the coordination of operators for our 3 HF stations and at least two people on site every day to act as guides to visitors and supervisors for newly licensed ham radio operators or those with novice licences.

Additionally apart from working full-time in my new job I have been at 2O12L from just after 6pm every night till around 10pm during the week and then Midnight at weekends and have also spent my days off and weekends centred around the needs of the operation. It’s going to be difficult to get back into the old routine after being involved with such a great event as I have really enjoyed my evenings operating and speaking with people all over the world. That together with my ability to operate pile ups which happen when lots of people are calling to work us.

One of my particular strengths is to pick our mobile, low power and portable operators as I like to give these operators a chance to work such events.
Hearing operators describe they are running 1 watt from the beach or a balcony of a block of flats or are mobile along a freeway is a great achievement both for them and for us.

As it stands at the moment we have made over 65,000 contacts around the world, beating all previous records of contact numbers by special event stations and smashing our own record at the start of the millennium with our own M2000A Event from Greenwich to celebrate the Millennium.

The event will certainly go down in history as one of the greatest events in Amateur Radio and Ham Radio history and has been well received by all of the visitors and those who have had contact with us.

Hopefully people will also remember the efforts made by Project Echo and the Cray Valley Radio Society to make it all possible in the first place.
Maybe others will also remember the good operators and ask us to take part in events they are running in the future or assist with advice on how to make events as great as ours
